September 1666 marked one of the most infamous disasters in London’s history, when what subsequently became known as the ‘Great Fire’ took over the City for three days, destroying almost everything in its path, including 13,000 houses.
350 years on, London is marking the anniversary of this momentous occasion and celebrating our beautiful city with a series of Great Fire-themed events, plus we are discounting items at our spa, salon and restaurants at our central London properties, details of which can be found here.
Beginning shortly after midnight on Sunday 2nd September 1666, at a bakery on the aptly named ‘Pudding Lane’, the Great Fire spread west across the City, consuming the medieval City of London inside the old Roman wall in its wake, one of the last remaining sections of which can be found at our Grange City Hotel’s Piazza.
The fire destroyed some of London’s most iconic buildings including the Royal Exchange and St Paul’s Cathedral, with the latter then later rebuilt under the leadership of Sir Christopher Wren to include the addition of his world-famous dome, which now overlooks our Grange St. Paul’s Hotel.
With this in mind, the Cathedral has planned several events to tie in with the anniversary of the fire, including ‘Out of the Fire’ from 1st September; an exhibition displaying St. Paul’s before, during and after the fire. Nearby, the Museum of London will also be hosting a range of events over the coming months, including lectures, guided walks, an interactive exhibition, and a Great Fire Anniversary Family Festival taking place from 3-4th Sept.
