10 Things To Do In Berkshire

  • What's On -24-Jul-2019

Windsor

Full of cobbled streets, crooked houses and home to the Royal Family, if Windsor isn’t already on your bucket list it definitely should be. The perfect place for a day trip, you’ll find Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park, shops, pubs, and the River Thames all in walking distance from each other. With five car parks and one train station Windsor is easily accessible from all over.

Not only is there a castle, the great park, shops, historical pubs, and the River Thames, Windsor is also home to Royal Windsor Racecourse, where many race days and events are held throughout the year.

1. Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle, also known as one of the oldest and largest occupied castles in the world. Founded in the 11th century, the castle has been the home of 39 monarchs. Today, the queen still spends a large amount of her private time at the castle, and when the flag is flying, her majesty is home! The Castle is open to the public everyday from 10am to 5pm, and you can get tickets here.

2. Windsor Great Park

With over 4,800 acres of historic parkland, woodland, beautiful scenery and forest trails you won’t be short of places to walk in Windsor. Windsor Great Park has a long history behind it. It dates all the way back to pre-Saxon times and has held many prestigious events throughout history. The Great Park is made up of four main separate areas; The Long Walk and Deer Park (situated right outside Windsor Castle), Virginia Water, The Valley Gardens and Swinley Forest.

3. Windsor Racecourse

Windsor Racecourse is almost as historical as Windsor Castle as it’s royal heritage dates back 700 years. The racecourse holds many events across the summer, from rum ‘n’ reggae race nights to rock at the races there’s something for everyone at this racecourse.

4. The Crooked House Of Windsor

This oak framed building has an eye-catching feature that might make you uneasy standing next to it. Over the years, The Crooked House Of Windsor has been used for many different purposes. It has been jewellers, brewers, printers, fruit sellers, florists and now the oldest teahouse in all of England. It has also proven extremely popular with tourists!

There are conflicting beliefs on why the house has the distinctive ‘lean’. Some suggest it comes

down to using poor materials. Some say the lean only appeared when adjoining buildings were removed in the early 1800s. If you want to see it for yourself, the house is located only 2 minutes away from the Castle on Windsor High Street, and it certainly won’t be hard to find!

5. St. George’s Chapel

Take a breath-taking tour at St. George’s Chapel tucked away inside Windsor Castle (a visit to St George’s Chapel is included in your Windsor Castle ticket). The chapel itself is known to be a place of worship for the Royals and also a church serving the local community. Built by kings, its Royal connection is historical, with members of the British Royal Family being baptised, married and buried there since it was built.
