Last Friday the leafy grounds of London’s Vincent Square, situated beside our Grange Wellington and Grange Rochester Hotels, once again became home to Grange Hotels’ annual Charity Cricket Day in aid of our long-term partner charity, Indian Ocean Disaster Relief (IODR); raising much-needed funds for their ongoing intervention projects in Nepal.
With twelve teams taking part to win the much-coveted IODR Cricket Trophy - made up of valued clients and England Cricket stars, Paul Nixon, Norman Cowans and Iain Nairn - the charity event was, as always, a complete success.
Despite the cold, spirits were high and the environment warm. The event brought to life Grange Hotels’ passion for corporate social responsibility and collaboration; joining people together for a morale-boosting day of sport, networking and team building, whilst at the same time supporting a worthy cause. Mayank Shah, MSD UK, who experienced the Cricket Day for the first time, remarked: “It’s a perfect cause for everyone to come together and help raise funds for. It’s also a relaxed atmosphere to meet new people, network and make some great connections; all round great day!”
Funds raised from Friday’s event are ring-fenced for IODR’s ongoing intervention projects in Nepal, which include the building of two schools in deprived rural areas. One project will see IODR build a school, including an examination centre and teacher training centre, to support 450 students and allow both boys and girls to gain qualifications. The second project will be the creation of a rehabilitation centre for trafficked young girls.
A day like this not only greatly benefits IODR, but also the players who participate, giving corporates the opportunity to interact with co-workers from different departments when they otherwise would not; form new partnerships by networking with players and spectators from a diverse range of companies; and empower employee engagement through sport and teamwork.
Players highlighted how committed their teams were to uniting both with each other, and with the other organisations, all with the common goal of raising funds for the work going on in Nepal. Prashant Kunwar, Khukuri Beers, stated: “We’ve been supporting Tony Matharu and Grange Hotels since 2015 after the Nepal earthquake, with the events they host to raise funds for IODR. The work IODR does in Nepal is amazing; building schools and shelters are making a real difference and we are right behind them in this.”
In the end, out of 12 teams, 4 groups and 2 pitches, there could only be one winner, and it was the IODR team who this time held up the trophy. Tony Matharu, Chairman of IODR and Grange Hotels’ Managing Director, commented: “It’s wonderful to have former England Cricket stars Paul Nixon and Norman Cowans supporting the IODR and Grange Hotels Cricket Day at Vincent Square. We are delighted to be this year’s winning team, but would of course like to thank all of the other teams and organisations who participated today and came together to make a real difference.”
Founded by Tony Matharu, Grange Hotels’ Managing Director in early 2005, IODR’s inception was initially to provide emergency relief following the devastating 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. IODR’s focus now is on creating a sustainable solution for children affected by the devastating Nepal earthquake, offering equal opportunities for both boys and girls through education.
