Best Spot to Watch the London Marathon

  • What's On -18-Apr-2018

But what if you’re not running?

There are so many fantastic places to watch the London Marathon. They really make you feel involved and part of the event. From great areas for families to quieter, lesser known places, we’ve listed the prime spots to make sure you get the best view of this massive marathon!

Near the Start – Woolwich Arsenal

If you’re keen to see the runners at their best, it’s definitely worth getting a spot to watch the London Marathon near the start. We recommend setting up camp around Woolwich Arsenal. It’s a quieter spot that lies along the 3-4 mile stretch of the marathon. The runners will have only just started the race, meaning you’ll be in the midst of the excitement as the marathon kicks off!

10 Mile Mark – Surrey Quays/Canada Water

Staying on the Southside of the River Thames, try checking out the area around Surrey Quays and Canada Water. This is the part of the race after the iconic Cutty Sark and before the runners cross Tower Bridge. It can be a bit busy, but the atmosphere and energy are absolutely worth it!

Crossing the River – Grange Tower Bridge

Why not wait to watch the marathon runners cross Tower Bridge from one of our two hotel bars at Grange Tower Bridge? You can enjoy a refreshing beverage and light snack either before or after the marathon goes past. It’s the ideal place to meet up with friends and family before getting stuck in to the main event!

Halfway Point – Grange City Hotel

Marking the halfway point at mile 13 is our Grange City Hotel. Drop in for a nice drink or stop for lunch at The Lutetia Bar and Brasserie, which has an outdoor Piazza to enjoy some al-fresco dining (weather permitting!). You can then step out on the streets to watch the runners go past and cheer them on into the second half of the course.

Enjoying the River – Westferry

This is north of the river and is a smaller location a bit further away from the crowds. It sits in the middle of a loop on the course. This means you can choose if you want to settle down for the day or move across to watch the runners come back around again into their last 5 miles.

Over Halfway - Isle of Dogs, Mudchute Farm

If you’re planning on taking the kids to watch the marathon then there’s no better place to go than Mudchute Farm. (Link to Spring blog once it is live) Located on the Isle of Dogs, this family-friendly venue offers the ideal vantage point where you can watch the runners. Plus, once they’ve all panted past you can have a fun day out on the farm too!

Doubling Back – Canary Wharf

As the runners’ loop back around on the north side of the river, the course takes them past Canary Wharf. This place is perfect to watch the London Marathon from as it’s a large and open space. On a clear day you might be able to catch a glimpse of the O2 Arena in the distance.

The Home Stretch – Grange St. Paul’s

If you fancy watching the marathon runners stream past before retreating to comfort and luxury, visit Grange St. Paul’s. Pop in and have a drink in one of our three high-end bars for a contemporary and relaxing experience.

At the Finish – Grange Rochester and Grange Wellington

There’s something special about watching the masses of runners cross the finish line on The Mall! It’s incredible to see how exhausted they are after a full 26 miles of running along our amazing City streets, but they’re all still smiling as the crowds cheer them in. If you want to stay near where all the action ends then hang out in our exclusive Grange Rochester Hotel. We’ve got two bars that serve a wide range of drinks and snacks to help you pass the time whilst you wait for the runners.  Alternatively, our Grange Wellington Hotel offers a peaceful retreat where you can meet up with friends and family and enjoy a relaxing drink in our comfortable bar.

These are some of our best places to watch the London Marathon from, but there are plenty more! With an enormous 26-mile course, you stand a pretty good chance at finding a spot and getting caught up in all the excitement. But if you ever fancy a moment of relaxation on London Marathon day then make sure you pop in to any of our Grange Hotels and enjoy one of our high-end, relaxing bars.
