Tower
Bridge was the one and only bridge built to
the east of London Bridge. The Bridge's design was put
forward by Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry in 1884.
The need for the design was to accommodate the river
traffic activities.
The bridge can be raised and lowered as required
with the aid of steam powered hydraulics which had
been replaced in 1976 by oil and electricity. The
original pumping engines and various other parts of
the bridge are now on show at the Tower Bridge Experience.
If you are interested in taking the behind the scenes
tour in order to see the current machinery and control
cabins you are required to pre-book.
You can buy joint tickets for the Tower Bridge Experience
and The Monument if you wish.
