An upcoming exhibition at the British Museum will give
London hotels guests the opportunity to take in some spectacular sculptures from a lost African kingdom.
The Kingdom of Ife: Sculptures from West Africa will feature pieces in brass, copper, stone and terracotta drawn almost exclusively from the collection of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Nigeria.
Between the 12th and 15th centuries Ife was a cosmopolitan and influence city-state in what is now south-west Nigeria.
It sat at the heart of local and long-distance trade lanes and flourished as a political, economic, cultural and spiritual hub.
During this period, Ife's artists developed a highly naturalistic sculptural style that is unlike anything seen on the African continent at the time.
Sculptures featured in the British Museum exhibition portray a wide cross-section of the kingdom's society, from the young to the old and from suffering to serenity.
The Kingdom of Ife: Sculptures from West Africa runs from March 4th until June 6th.
Hotels close to the British Museum include the Grange
White Hall hotel, which overlooks the venue.
